Another useless charity bites the dust

A HYNDBURN-wide charity which helps young families faces closure within months unless it can raise emergency funds.

The meaning of the word "Charity" has been turned on it's head under New Labour. If they were a real charity the government cuts would not affect them because they would not be receiving government money. A real charity would get it's funding directly from the public and would be accountable to them. Charity now means funded by the taxpayer and accountable to no one.

So what do they do and is it a vital service?

The Accrington-based organisation helps families with young children under five, who face special challenges such as bereavement, illness and isolation.

Erm..No. Bereavement, illness and isolation are not special challenges. They are part of life that we all must go through from time to time. In fact, if this is their entire remit then they are worse than useless and deserve no public funding whatsoever. (Although I admit I would be hard pressed to find a charity that I did think was worthy of tax money)

The organisation, which has helped 180 children in the past year, costs £100,000 a year.

They have helped 180 children in one year at a cost of 556 pounds per child, with bereavement, illness or isolation. Do I need to further my case or can we agree that this money could be much better spent than by giving it to this non-entity?

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones said: “This really shows how cuts are killing the Big Society and changing us into a little society where everyone just worries about themselves. Voluntary and charity organisations like Home Start do immense amounts of good and contribute to our borough’s well being, yet they are being casually flushed away.”

That's another word that has been turned on it's head, Big Society. It originally meant small government. Now all these leechers who want to dip their hands in tax payers money use the term big society to mean stealing from the many to give to the few.
