I was perusing my news feed and spotted this headline:
Londoners defend shoplifter for 'walking out of Tesco without paying' after stuffing trolley with food
Often a headline like that is just clickbait*, and the article itself says, 'not really', but in this case, people are actually defending the right to shoplift
Londoners have rushed to defend an alleged shoplifter who filled her trolley with food in Tesco then walked out of the store without paying. A Redbridge resident who witnessed the incident took to Facebook to warn other shops to beware, but instead was met with support for the woman.
I would be interested to know the demographic of the supporters of this thief, considering what London has become
However, locals came to the unknown woman's defence, saying that times are tough and suggested that she may be struggling financially. One said: "You're joking aren't you? You have no idea what that lady might be going through." A second added: "Tesco is a multi million pound company I'm sure they will manage."A third agreed: "Why do you care more about big corporations than people struggling during the cost of living crisis."
I can't understand this line of thinking. Even when the old moral arguement used to be, is it ok if a man steals a loaf of bread if his family is starving, I've always considered theft to be wrong
There are moral arguments for doing something wrong in the loaf of bread for starving family situation, but we live in one of the richest countries in the world, with the most generous welfare system in the world. Failing that, we also have a growing network of foodbanks taking up any slack there may be
Walking out of a supermarket with a trolley full of grub you didn't pay for is theft, and it's wrong on every level
It doesn't matter what you're struggling with or how much money the company turns over
This woman is a shit, and some of my fellow human beings really do make me dispair
*Considering the source, Facebook, clickbait is still a good description anyway
