Black Child, 12, Heckled While Singing Opera Live on Stage Sparks Anger
That the heckler was being racist? That he was shouting something along the lines of, 'Get off the stage you black barsteward!'?
Malakai M. Bayoh was performing the opening lines of his debut performance at the Royal Opera House in London when the unnamed heckler shouted "rubbish" from the crowd.
Rubbish. That's it. Nothing at all to do with his skin colour, but we had to be told he was black anyway. Wouldn't have been mentioned if he was white
Associate arts editor at the Financial Times, Josh Spero, was in the audience and heard the person shouting. He took to Twitter to say Bayoh had been singing his lines "sweetly" and described the situation as the "nastiest thing," asking: "Who would do that to a child?"
A child? He's an actor. An actor performing at the Royal Opera House in front of what was probably a large audience
You really shouldn't yell at stage actors, that should be left for TV and film, but their age has got nothing to do with it. Sometimes that happens to actors who put themselves out there
What if he really was rubbish? Does his age shield him from criticism?
It wasn't a nice thing to do, but if he's any good, he'll have a long career ahead of him and should be prepared for this not being the first time
And sometimes bad things that happen to black people, aren't actually racism
(And since writing this, a slightly different take in the Guardian, no less, that acknowledges it probably wasn't racism and it's sometimes OK to boo Opera singers, but again, as long as they're not 12)
