Irish doc thinks we're all potential suicide cases

Psychiatrist calls for lithium to be added to water
A consultant psychiatrist last night called on Government to add lithium salts to the public water supply in a bid to lower the suicide rate and depression among the general population.
At a mental health forum on “Depression in Rural Ireland” in Ennistymon, Co Clare, Dr Moosajee Bhamjee (Moose? Ed.) said that “there is growing scientific evidence that adding trace amounts of the drug lithium to a water supply can lower rates of suicide and depression”.
Lithium is used by doctors as a mood stabiliser in the treatment for depression.
I'm sorry but we're not all suffering from bi-polar disorders. Why treat the entire population just so you can catch a few people that would normally walk into your office and bother your golf schedule?

I don't suffer from depression and I certainly don't want to be treated for it. How the hell do I know what lithium does to you when you're not ill? Trust the Government and the medical establishment? You must be kidding me! The BMA can't even give us truthful figures on smoking; their prohibitionist agenda is propped up by downright lies.

Dr Bhamjee said: “A recent article in the British Journal of Psychiatry found the beneficial uses of lithium when it was added to the water supply in parts of Texas.”

They're already doing it? Erm, no they're not. There were studies done in Texas in the eighties that showed areas with higher naturally occurring lithium had lower suicide and crime rates. It was suggested at the time that lithium should be added to the water supply. Similar studies were also done in Japan, although it seems they didn't suggest adding it to the water.

He said the Government should consider a pilot project for a town in Ireland where lithium salts could be added to the water in very small doses and examine the results.” He said there was already strong precedent for governments intervening in the operation of public water supply for health benefits by adding fluoride.
So they do it with one thing, why not do it with another. They just can't help themselves can they? Lets add nicotine and glucose too, to help all those smokers and fatties eh?

I wonder what the people in 'a town in Ireland' would think of having their water supply spiked with drugs? I bet sales of bottled water would increase, although it's more expensive than booze, so I hear.

I suppose it may be a good way to create a population of docile Irish folk who don't break the law or even question authority. Tinfoil hat? Maybe.

He said: “There are 200,000 people suffering from depression in Ireland and the Government must think of new ways of tackling the problem.”
Erm, reduce taxes, pull out of the EU and stop meddling in peoples lives? And those suggestions are just for starters.
