A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a suspected intruder at a Greater Manchester house.
Ch Supt Paul Gibson from Greater Manchester Police said a second suspected intruder fled the scene
Police found a man, aged in his 30s, with knife injuries after they were called to a house in Midland Road, Bramhall, at 19:50 BST on Saturday.
A 33-year-old man has also been arrested in connection with the burglary.
The man arrested on suspicion of murder is aged 39 and believed to be the householder.
This is the third high profile incident of it's kind since we were told householders who exercise their right to self defence will not be prosecuted.
In June this year, Peter Flanagan, 59, escaped charges after he was arrested on suspicion of murder when an intruder was stabbed to death in his house in Salford.
In July, grandfather Cecil Coley, 72, was freed without charges after he stabbed an armed raider to death when a gang smashed their way into his florist’s shop in Old Trafford, Manchester.
But why are these people being arrested at all? An arrest on suspicion of murder, even if you are later released without charge, is a life changing event. Add that to the fact that you have just been the victim of an aggravated burglary, and you have been forced to take a human life.
The man was home alone when the burglary happened although his wife and son returned during the incident but were unharmed.
Ch Supt Tim Forber, said: "Clearly this is a serious incident in which a man has lost his life and at this time we believe the dead man was one of two men who were attempting to carry out a burglary at the house."
If the police believe that this man was killed in an attempted burglary, ie. in self defence, why is the arrest for murder necessary? Surely this crime can be investigated completely and properly without detaining the householder. I'm sure he would be happy to make a full statement to the police, with legal advice and without the cuffs being necessary.
Come on British police. Start giving the victims the benefit of the doubt. If after your investigations you still believe a murder has taken place, that's the time for an arrest, not before.
I'm sure this man will also be released without charge and it's good that homeowners who defend themselves with deadly force are not being prosecuted, but let's stop treating them like murderers.
