Blackburn health scheme saves lives

Experts believe around 30 lives have been saved and at least another 64 transformed thanks to a health and fitness initiative.

Crap of the highest order! Who are these experts and what could they possibly basing this nonsense on?

Blackburn with Darwen’s re:fresh scheme has been hailed a success after research revealed that around 30 premature deaths, 20 heart attacks, 30 cases of diabetes, 10 strokes and four potential cancer diagnosis’ had been prevented.

The shite that these local councils spout is getting beyond the ridiculous. Stats that cannot possibly be based on anything, pulled out of the air to justify another huge wast of taxpayers cash.

The so called Re:Fresh scheme (and that does say regarding fresh) is one where the council knocked down a perfectly good leisure centre, built another one on the same site and made it's services 'free'. Of course when I say free I mean the user does not pay at the point of use but everyone else in the borough now covers the cost.

And as a result of the re:fresh scheme the NHS in the borough may saved around £200,000 a year on treatments.

'May have saved "200,000. It's always about how much the NHS can save, even though we have already paid for any treatment we may need through our National Insurance.

In this instance though, they are not even quoting the fairy tale savings in order to justify the cost.

Despite the savings to the NHS, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and the Care Trust Plus have agreed to invest a further £1.65 million with a promise of further funding to extend the programme for another two years.

1.6 million to return a saving of £400,000 over two years. Only in the public sector.

Set up three years ago, 15,000 people take part in some kind of physical activity through re:fresh and 7,500 more started doing the recommended weekly 90 minutes.

I used to play badminton at Darwen Leisure centre before all this crap. It used to cost £6 for the two of us and we went weekly. Now we are lucky to get a court once every three weeks.

This scheme may save the lives of thirty odd feckless chavs, but it isn't doing my fitness any good. And I was paying for it!
Director of public health for Blackburn with Darwen, Dominic Harrison, said: "Re:fresh is making a real difference to people in Blackburn with Darwen.

It's certainly making a difference to me. You've taken something I used to enjoy and given it away to those who don't want to pay. Not only that but I'm still paying for it through my council tax.
"These figures are just estimates but the benefits are real. Many, many people have improved the quality of their day to day lives.

They're not even estimates, they're just arse wibble. And what about those folk who have had a negative impact. What about us who used to pay for this service before you got all righteous on our arses, and now we can't get a bloody look in?

"The savings to the borough by avoiding the costs of poor health are also very real, which is why despite the current challenges we are facing we've decided to reinvest in re:fresh."

The savings you quoted above? A net loss of £600,000 per year, just so some fat whaps can get out of the council house for an hour. Whoop-de-fucking-do.
Blackburn with Darwen Council's executive member for Culture and Leisure, Coun Damian Talbot, said: "It has made a significant difference to the health of our residents and I hope that as many people as possible (Ed. ???) continue to take advantage of the scheme so that we can see more results like these."

As many people as possible? All you've done is taken the facility away from the people with the ability to pay and given it to those who can't (or won't).

The figures were derived from the number of people who began exercising because of re:fresh and the illnesses they could have developed if they had not taken up any physical activity, according to previous research studies.
