Post-Brexit shortfall of EU workers cancelled out by staff from rest of world
Really? Was Brexit not supposed to increase the wages paid for British jobs in order to get more British people into work and off benefits? Were the Europeans not supposed to bugger off home and create a shortfall in jobs which inflated wages, making it more attractive to be in work rather than on the scrounge?
So instead we're importing low wage workers from further afield, apparently, so that didn't work out well
Personally, I never thought that the 'send the buggers back and increase the wages' plan of action was the right way to do it
In my opinion, we had two 'problems' before Brexit; a generous UK welfare system and a higher minimum wage than most European countries. The upshot was
- English people staying at home on benefits and refusing to work because they could get more money breeding kids
- Europeans coming here to fill the shortages in the employment market, as they could earn more
Point two I never really had a problem with. If someone wants to sell their skills on the international market, I'm all for that. It was point one I had an issue with. These jobs are only available because we pay people to stay at home
If we significantly reduce the amount of welfare people are entitled to claim, many of them would be forced to go out and get jobs. I've always said that the maximum amount of benefits any one person should be able to claim, should be the equivalent of 35 hours per week on minimum wage, minus tax
No additions for children, council tax, rent or anything else. Pay for those out of your benefits, just like wage earners do
More home grown people in work rather than scrounging and if people from further afield want to come and do the jobs that are still available, they are welcome to do so (Without access to benefits without residency)
If all the Europeans were to go home and businesses in Britain had to increase their wages, we would be in the same repeating cycle as we are with the minimum wage. If you increase wages, you increase the cost of goods and services to pay for those wages
When the cost of living increases due to higher wages for British people, I guarantee you the Government would increase the amount of benefits paid to scroungers, to compensate. To do otherwise would be 'not fair'. (Only children and socialists expect life to be fair)
So benefits go up in line with wage increases, British people stay on the dole and people from other countries flock to fill the jobs and earn the higher wages
I much prefer my solution of reducing benefits to the point where a life on the dole becomes untenable, but that's why nobody has ever voted for me as Prime Minister
Anyhoo, I voted for Brexit, but it was never for any of the above, as I knew it would never cure any of the above. I voted Brexit so I could buy a vacuum cleaner powerful enough to pick up cat hairs and a coffee machine that stays on long enough for you to drink the whole pot
I still can't. Our Government has embraced all the old EU laws into our own system and is even bringing in more of the same. On top of that, they want to prove themselves the most batshit crazy Government in the world (with stiff competition), with all their green bullshit they are forcing on us
Apart from a couple of decent trade deals, alot of the good that Brexit could have been, seem to be being wasted
We managed to rid ourselves of one layer of top down control and bureaucracy, but we still have one very big one to go and that will be a much stiffer challenge
Maybe we could get it trending on Tik Tok and call it the piano wire challenge?
