So I'm picking up the new car today when I finish work. I rang my insurance company and asked them to change my insurance over to the new car at 17:30 tonight (Go home in old car at 5, get lift off wife to pick up new car at 6)
No problem, they said
I got the new documents through and the time of the changeover is down as today at midnight. So I phoned back at went through all the stupid options, messages and legal info before being put on hold for an operator. When I eventually spoke to someone, the stupid cow cut me off in the first ten seconds
So I did it all again
The next person I eventually spoke to assured me all would be sorted and I would be sent new documents. I was. Dated 16th April at 12:01 to 16th April at 12:00. One minutes car insurance, as long as I do 88mph and go back in time
They close at 8 and I can't be doing all that pain in the ass on the phone while I'm at work, so I've bought a day policy from a company who does short term insurance. I'll have to deal with my main company when I eventually get home this evening
I also needed to tax it. The Government have this lovely scheme where you pay for road tax by the full month and can't get a refund for part months or transfer between cars or owners. That means I can't get my tax back on the old car for March and I have to tax the new car from 1st March. That's a full month where I have paid tax twice. The Government are experts at daylight robbery, but this scheme really takes the cake
So I went onto the Government website, put all the car details in, entered my credit card details and...
"...Your payment is not authorised. You may have entered your card details wrong. Click here to start again"
Not re-enter your card details. Not try a different payment method. Start again
So I did it all again
Very carefully this time. Success! I've paid for road tax I technically already had
Part of the details I needed to enter for the tax, was the 12 digit reference number of the new keeper slip on the V5. The V5 is still with the garage, so I texted the guy and asked him to send me the number. Then I rang him. Then I texted him again. He got back to me a couple of hours later and said he would send it to me in the evening as he was not in the office
At 8 I texted him again. He responded saying he sent it to my Whatsapp ages ago. Turns out he had taken a photo of the document and sent it to my Whatsapp account that I never use. How hard is it just to do what I ask and text me a 12 digit number?
So I'm road legal and ready to pick up the car this evening. Barring breakdowns on the way, floods, wildfires or nuclear war
