Make me a sammich

Once again, some woman is complaining that men don't pull their weight around the house

There are crumbs all over the counter. The electric stove top is spattered with oil from cooking last night’s dinner. The food bin needs taking out. The limescale around the sink is starting to build up again. The cat’s food station is starting to look like he eats off the floor instead of a bowl.

It’s not that he doesn’t lift a finger. But this phenomenon of not being able to see things that need doing – and only doing them after I ask him to – is not unique to my husband. It’s well-known that, among heterosexual couples at least, women bear the brunt of domestic work in the home. A 2020 Grazia survey found that 73 per cent of women who live with a partner felt they did more “invisible labour” at home than their partner. Fifty-five per cent of them felt that such imbalance has a negative impact on their mental health.
Oh cry me a fucking river

Invisible labour? What about the invisible labour that we do. A few crumbs on the work surface is something or nothing. We deal with the serious stuff that would have dire consequences if not done

Men clean the guttering of dead leaves and sludge, unblock the drains, repoint the bricks, remove the wasps nest, paint the house and fix the fence

We take the car for it's MOT, replace the plugs and filters, top up the coolant, change the oil, wax it and tax it

We fix the pipes, repair the electrics, get the boiler serviced and the chimney swept. Replace the light bulbs, fix the curtain rail and put the shelves up

We're joiners, brickies, mechanics and plumbers, and when anything needs doing, we're normally wet, cold or covered in grease and oil

On top of all that, we have to work 40 hours a week and split the childcare 50/50, so don't complain at us for sitting on the couch playing Playstation games in our rare off time, just becuase you can't be bothered bleaching a fucking toilet
