A speech that in true Labour fashion is total bollocks and completely misses the point.
The schoolboy tugged at delegates’ heartstrings with a tale of his home being repossessed and the family having ‘nothing, no money, no savings’, and only the benefits system to fall back on.
The tale he tells is one of hardship and woe where the benevolent state stepped in to save a family from destruction. The true tale, according to The Wail is one of a very rich family who's businesses went bust and a pampered brat in Grammar school education.
Nevertheless, his fathers business did go bankrupt and they did have to go on benefits so technically, the story is true, if somewhat embellished with poetic licence.
We are not told the story of how the fathers businesses failed, weather it was through his own stupidity or through circumstances beyond his control. What we are told is that this kid misses the point of the welfare state entirely.
Attacking the ‘vicious and Right-wing’ Government, Rory conjured up an image of his destitute family as he told Labour delegates: ‘Two and a half years ago, the home I had lived in since birth was repossessed. We had nothing, no money, no savings.
‘I owe my entire well-being and that of my family to the welfare state. That is why I joined the Labour Party, but that very same welfare state is being ruthlessly ripped apart by a vicious and Right-wing Tory-led government.
‘I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for that system, that safety net. So I take this opportunity to plead with the Government to reconsider their measures.’
Kid, the vicious right wing government is not ripping apart the welfare system. Their intent (even though they have yet to achieve much) is roll back the welfare state until it becomes once again that which it was originally intended to be, a safety net.
When your fathers business went bankrupt, that was the part of the welfare state that you saw, the part that gives help to those who have fallen on hard times, allowing them to pick themselves up and begin again. The modern welfare state does not do that. It gives free money to people who just don't want to work. It pays people for having babies. It encourages hoards of asylum seekers to cross continents and come here. It encourages people to claim a lifetime of disability payments because they have 'depression'.
The welfare state has grown beyond all control, costing a fortune to keep afloat. That money is taken from the hard working to be given to the feckless who spend it on Stella.
The welfare state you talk of it what it was meant to be and what it should be again.
He also goes on to attack the Grammar school system of which he is a part.
However the teenager was keen to say he was against selective education, which also remains Labour party policy.
He told the Daily Mail: ‘Personally, I’m against grammar schools. I think the eleven-plus is divisive and I think it’s wrong to segregate people at that age.
The Labour party sees selective education as elitist. The Labour party also see all the people as exactly the same, all to be modelled in exactly the same way. They will never understand that some children are more intelligent than others and that's just the way life is.
You talk about your own experiences kid. How much do you really have?
