When we had the harsh winter last year, all the stocks of grit ran out and then all the shops and supermarkets ran out of salt.
Since then I've added a 1k bag of salt to every online shop. It's the Sainsburys basics stuff and it costs about 17p per bag. Like Leg-Iron says, I'm unsure what they take out of salt to make it cheaper. I've got quite a lot stocked up now for if the same happens again this year, and I've a strong feeling it will.
UK weather forecast for snow and prolonged cold spell
When last nights order arrived at the door, guess what. No salt. They were out of stock.

There was also a huge queue of cars at the local tyre-fitting place, just along from the supermarket.
Nobody seems to bother preparing for anything any more. They just wait until it happens, then panic.
No wonder the country is falling apart.
Bloggers would so be kings in a national emergency :-)
I've just fitted my set of winter wheels & tyres. But I've always had at least one pair of spare wheels with suitable tyres, ever since I started driving 37 years ago...
And I also keep a shovel, tow rope, and set of jump leads with me.
I keep the essentials in the boot aswell, but I donr bother with special tyres and stuff on my banger.
