Grandad forced to do school run in the rain after waiting a year for £37k Land Rover
Savvy enough to be able to afford a brand new £37k Land Rover, but not intelligent enough to buy a £500 Toyota Corolla to keep him going while he waits for it to be built?
Asked if he would give up and get another car, Michael said he had five grandchildren and needed a seven-seater.
Oh, my mistake. A £750 Volkswagen Sharan, then

The roads around here provide ample testimony to this on wet days, which is sad for the youngsters missing out on fresh air and exercise as well as the element of fun. My younger son was, perhaps, extreme - whenever it rained, he would grab his coat and wellies and head into the garden for hours - but we weren’t the only family who enjoyed many cheerful walks to school in wet weather.
However, he had a classmate whose mother announced at the school gate one wet day that her children didn’t own raincoats as she could afford to drive them everywhere; in any case, she said loftily, she wouldn’t let them walk to school on rainy days because there were too many cars on the road then and they might get splashed. My involuntary snort of derisive laughter offended her so much she never spoke to me again, for which I was profoundly grateful.
