NHS to ask pregnant women to take a smoking test to prevent stillbirthsThis is what it's come down to. This is what discrimination against smokers gets you
The propaganda and junk science has become so rampant that we actually believe smoking causes still births. Ignoring the fact that the majority of our generation and younger, were born to smoking parents, initiative like this will only serve to blame women if they have a still birth. It's disgusting. What is probably the most traumatic thing an expectant mother can go through, will now be blamed squarely on them in the name of fighting smoking
The plans form part of the Saving Babies’ Lives programme, which offers stop smoking advice and encourages mothers-to-be and medical staff to look out for warning signs of problem pregnancies.Offering stop smoking services to those who want them is one thing, although those that do would have probably already asked, but this initiative is about treating all expectant mothers as smokers unless they can prove they are not. In these days of denying NHS services to people who smoke, it's a very dangerous precedent to set
And look at the wording:
From July, the electronic carbon monoxide test will be offered to all expectant mothers in England at antenatal appointments up to as late as 36 weeks."Offered". As in, choice
Doctor: "Do you smoke?"
Woman: "No"
Doctor: "Would you like to take a test to prove that you are not a liar?"
It comes as NHS England said a pilot scheme launched in 2017 saved 160 babies’ lives, increased the detection of growth problems by 59 per cent and resulted in 20 per cent fewer stillbirths.I would love to know how the figure of 160 babies was arrived at, as it's clearly bollocks
Assuming the pilot was run in one NHS trust over the last two years, that would be the equivalent of 12,000 babies per year, over all 150 trusts. As no such scheme existed when I was born, then 120,000 still births would have been caused by smoking alone in that decade
According to the BMJ, there are 3,400 still births every year, from all causes
Someone is telling porkies, but that no longer surprises us
“The number of women smoking in pregnancy is at a record low – but too many women still suffer the tragedy of a stillbirth as a result of smoking,” he said. This is disgusting behaviour by the 'envy of the world'. I hope they can prove every still birth they blame on the mother, was actually caused by smoking
Healthcare is supposed to be caring
