"What did he Tweet?" I hear you ask. Was it racist or threatening? Did he say he was going to blow up an airport?
No.
Here is the tweet
That is worthy of arrest? WTF is going on? It's the ramblings of a gormless pillock, but that's all.
A teenage boy was arrested today after malicious tweets were sent to Olympic diver Tom Daley, accusing him of letting down his late father by missing out on a medal.
Dorset Police confirmed they had arrested a 17-year-old at a guest house in Weymouth.
A police spokesman said: 'A 17-year-old man was arrested by Dorset Police officers in the early hours this morning at a guesthouse in the Weymouth area on suspicion of malicious communications.
'He is currently helping police with their inquiries.'
What have the British police become that they spend their time reading Twitter and nicking anyone who tweets something that isn't all sunshine and flowers?
When news of the insensitive tweet spread, Rileyy69 attempted to apologise. He even realised had had been a bit of a dick and tried to apologise in a vain attempt to head off the coming 'twitterstorm'.
He tweeted: '@TomDaley1994 I’m sorry mate i just wanted you to win cause its the olympics I’m just annoyed we didn’t win I’m sorry tom accept my apology.'
He later added: 'please i don’t want to be hated I’m just sorry you didn’t win i was rooting for you pal to do britain all proud just so upset.'
Dorset Police later confirmed they were investigating the incident.
A spokesman for the force wrote on Twitter: 'Regarding tweets to @tomdaley1994 - we are aware of the issue and we are actively looking into it.
He still got he collar felt though, along with the inevitable fingerprints and DNA sample for the polices childish database.
Should be interesting to see how this one goes. The fact that the police are even involved is reason to be very scared right now....
*Update*
Thanks to @cwarner7264 Chris Warner on Twitter who has more information on this than the MSM, it seems young Riley is no ray of sunshine.
This link references many other tweets he has sent which are not too pretty. The guy is a regular troll. It also states a number of laws which suggest sending crap like this via Twitter would be deemed an offence and it is therefore right that he should have been arrested.
That's where myself and Mr Warner disagree. Just because a law exists does not mean it is right. Freedom of speach inevitably means some people will be offended / choose to take offence. When you remove freedom of speach for one under a thin veil of protecting people from offence, you remove freedom from all of us.
The way to deal with a troll is to ignore, delete, block, ban. Not to call the police.
Yes this bloke is complete tool. No he did not deserve to be arrested.
This link, also supplied by Chris, lists a number of his tweets, many nasty. Like I said, he's a pillock. He's not (or should not be) a criminal.
