Differing opinions are welcome in these parts

My stance is of course, largely based on the idea that people shouldn't be dicks to each other. It's unfortunate that they are, but I don't believe we can legislate against people being that way
You ask where would it end? I like to think it would end with most drivers not refusing guide dogs or anyone else based on whatever prejudice. There will be dicks who refuse to take blind people or white people or whatever, but most people don't think like that and I reckon that if we were left to our own devices without the Government enforcing our thinking, we would not spiral into a totally segregated society based on the whims of each persons personal hatred, but would manage to create quite a nice world. Probably

I'll have to say though, I'm always in favour of not paying taxes. Just because a driver may not like dogs is not a good enough excuse. If taxi drivers were allowed to refuse guide dogs, where would it end? A blind person would be hard pushed to find any cab at all. What about a bus driver that doesn't like children? Would you say he can refuse to let children on the bus?
I used to live near a cab driver and he was always boasting how he never declared his true earnings even though he had an ex wife and children he should have supported he made out he couldn't afford to pay maintenance. He could certainly buy all the mod cons though. So what I'm saying is that taxi drivers do alright for a living and it won't hurt for them to be made to take the odd pet now and then.
Sorry to disagree with you. It's not that expensive over here to become a taxi driver (not sure about the black cabs), but there are still a number of hurdles to pass, including the extensive MOT testing of the vehicles. I'm sure the Government causes more probelms than it fixes, but that's true of everything
The big problem faced in this area is that the bulk of the cab drivers are muslim and such people do not like dogs
The large muslim population could also be blamed on Government policy though. At the end of the day, you can't legislate against peoples backward superstitionsBuckohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03169970711606515445noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-232613925790974435.post-12884599701058052302019-09-03T08:30:33.554+01:002019-09-03T08:30:33.554+01:00Brigitte - Indeed. I can only talk from my experience in Australia but my understanding is taxis in the UK operate under similar rules. To run a cab you have to buy the right to own the plates or licence or however the system works there. There are limited plates, issued by the government, so there are limited taxis, and the plates are quite expensive, here traditionally on par with an average house. The blind person's choice, therefore, has been limited by government interference restricting the number of cabs.

The government's attempt to fix that is to mandate the cabbie has to carry the dog, whatever his objections. In a free market, yes, there would probably be little or no problem finding a cab to carry the dog. In a free market the cabby would also have the option of, say, charging extra for the dog and so he'd have an incentive to do so.

The trouble is, it isn't a free market.

DickfromOzAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-232613925790974435.post-21898278943445292432019-08-24T19:46:05.430+01:002019-08-24T19:46:05.430+01:00Are you suggesting that such discrimination laws b...Are you suggesting that such discrimination laws be repealed?
My answer is YES, too.
Fact is laws don't change anything and more and more of them cause a convoluted, often contradictory, judicial system. Also, there are plenty of ways around discrimination laws (ask any 55+ aged applying for work), so they are pointless laws.

To the blind lady with her guide dog: Surely she could not flag a cab down in the road! If I had to take my cat to the vet by taxi, I sure would tell the company that I have a cat in a cat carrier. That way they would send me a driver who does not object.

It's common sense and courtesy.

BeobrigitteAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-232613925790974435.post-84098849007822426102019-08-12T07:17:40.307+01:002019-08-12T07:17:40.307+01:00It sure is! 😀It sure is! 😀Buckohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03169970711606515445noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-232613925790974435.post-5461373866916456402019-08-11T07:08:01.973+01:002019-08-11T07:08:01.973+01:00Isn't it amazing we can have such a discussion...Isn't it amazing we can have such a discussion, without it turning into a shitfest like most Left wing blogs? :)

JuliaMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07844126589712842477noreply@blogger.com
