We were penalised by Abbey Life when we took out health cover for a mortgage extension. The Pru also impose a smokers' surcharge on their life policies. Both phrase this policy as 'rewarding non-smokers', but of course it's not. It's penalising smokers on their 'evidence' that smokers are intrinsically unhealthy/die younger.

2. If anyone's interested, this link http://www.data-yard.net/science/therapeutic/wilsonphs.pdf takes you to an American National Health survey from the days before Big Tobacco Control (1964-5). Data collected on the incidence of several chronic conditions (heart disease, high blood pressure, breathing/digestive/arthritis/hearing problems) are listed according to to amount smoked:
Less than 100 cigarettes ever (= never smoker)
<10 a day
11-20 a day
21-40 a day
>40 a day

The tables make for hours of fun, especially if you're a relatively moderate smoker. There's a similar, Australian survey from around the same time that produced pretty much the same results. Overall, current moderate smokers (up to 20 a day) had fewer chronic conditions than never smokers. The unhealthiest cohorts were those who smoked more than 40 a day and ex-smokers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
