However it maybe worth pointing out that re-introducing the death penalty is a breach of EU law.

Whether that's a good thing or not is debatable but in effect it deprives the parents of Holly Wells, Jessica Chapman and Milly Dowler of expressing their views via the ballot box. That in itself is also wrong.TheBoilingFroghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00791961503315586243noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-232613925790974435.post-23740040418120472662011-07-31T22:53:55.639+01:002011-07-31T22:53:55.639+01:00Bucko: When a criminal commits a serious crime lik...Bucko: When a criminal commits a serious crime like murder, the thought of punishment is rarely a factor. Either they believe they have fully planned the crime and don't think they will get caught or they are acting out of desperation or impulse, not giving a thought to the consequences.

Or that they will kill themselves before the police arrive...Paulnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-232613925790974435.post-15730411338761230552011-07-31T08:58:17.499+01:002011-07-31T08:58:17.499+01:00Everyone seems to be running ahead of themselves o...Everyone seems to be running ahead of themselves on this one. Assuming that Guidos petition gains enough traction, at best it will only be debated in Parliament. I'm not sure that even that is guaranteed.

It has been said that the vast majority of MPs are against capital punishment, so even if there is a debate and vote, it is unlikely to be restored.

Some others will probably start a petition for having a referendum on EU membership - there are just as many surveys showing that this would be popular, and nobody has to die. However, MPs are largely Europhiles and will not take any notice of public wishes.Mick Andersonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-232613925790974435.post-7410695762480254482011-07-30T19:40:15.295+01:002011-07-30T19:40:15.295+01:00I've said much the same thing myself more than...I've said much the same thing myself more than once, though my main concern is that the state is prone to abusing other powers it grants itself. This is one power that for once the state is shying away from and trying to rid itself of, and I think we should be encouraging it to do that much more often. The last thing we should be doing is saying "No, please, take back your legal ability to kill those who you want dead when they are currently no threat and completely in your power." Wouldn't mind seeing some more thought in the sentencing though, in particular recognition that while scum are locked up they generally don't commit crimes. Objectively I wouldn't object to cushy prisons if - and this is a big if - it can be shown that reoffending is substantially reduced. Some countries reckon it does but I suspect it depends on other factors rather than just hotel like prison facilities alone.Angry Exilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02491082312193274360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-232613925790974435.post-49302643063404919702011-07-30T16:32:47.106+01:002011-07-30T16:32:47.106+01:00NewsboyCap - I agree there could be calls for capi...NewsboyCap - I agree there could be calls for capital punishment for certain classes of people, however we could never be sure that there will not be mistakes. Besides, I don't trust our government far enough to give them that kind of power.

Agreed about MPs though. You couldn't possibly make a mistake there. As long as they have the Rt. Hon. prefix, they would be fair game :-)Buckohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03169970711606515445noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-232613925790974435.post-27372163254700712542011-07-30T14:30:13.158+01:002011-07-30T14:30:13.158+01:00Bucko
